Author visits can be both fun and educational

Author school visits are a common practice throughout the world. After all, schools want to encourage the children to make reading and writing a natural part of their lives. The guest author can inspire the children while knowledge and understanding can be passed to them in a fun way.

If children can focus their young minds on a good book or writing a quality story themselves, they gain in many ways. Reading and writing are considered to be essential for a sound education.

Many activities in life depend upon good literacy skills, from being inventive with language to understanding the directions on a container of frozen groceries. A visiting writer has the enthusiasm and skill to entice children into the realm of books.

It is a marvellous time for children and teachers when author visits happen. The writer will address individual classes of children, two classes together or even the whole school.

The pupils understanding will develop because they are meeting a real, live author.  They will learn about the essential qualities of a highly practised writer. They will find out what inspired the speaker to become an author and how that happened. They will hear about the joys and difficulties of creating books.

“Where do your ideas come from?” is a question frequently put to writers. A real live author is able to answer not just from theory but from experience, explaining their particular methods. The creation of ideas is very important to an author of fiction and they can talk about it with enthusiasm. Their own instances of imagination can be recounted. Through all this, the pupils will discover their ability to be creative when writing.

Children have the chance to buy the author’s books and this is a further appealing aspect of the author talk day. When the books are autographed by the author, the children receive something personal to each of them. This means that the book they have bought to read is also a special reminder of the day.

A fine way to enhance children’s education is an author school visit. It will boost their development in literacy in a refreshing and fun way.
