The greenhouse should face east and west, the door/ventilation end facing south, and the northern end against the protection of a wall, hedge or fence.
Which Greenhouse?
The best value greenhouses are flat packed for self-assembly. If you are blessed with the patience and (if possible) some helping hands to assist, then these aluminium and glass structures represent excellent value, and are the perfect solution for a budding organic garden owner.
Select the largest size that you can afford and accommodate. You will always be grateful for the extra space later, and the larger greenhouses provide more stable environmental conditions. They are also less susceptible to nightly heat loss and daytime overheating.
Finally, ventilation is a critical feature of any greenhouse – so ensure yours has as much as possible (preferably allowing for a cross flow of air).
Access to Services

Availability of electricity and water is crucial to maximising the effectiveness of your greenhouse. You will want to ensure your plants do not get battered by extreme low temperatures, and you may also need to guarantee a frost-free environment throughout the year.

Gas heaters are an option, but they can be tricky to run, and expensive to buy. A ready power source enables cheap and easy low level heating when it is needed, and also allows you to install lighting for use in dark winter days.
A water supply is even more important, as it will be used daily throughout the year. Consider installing a tap, or running a dedicated hose out to the greenhouse. It is recommended to install a water butt to capture rain, as this makes environmental sense and is better for all plants (rain water is essential for orchids and carnivorous plants).
Cleanliness
The warm, humid and sheltered conditions that allow for great plant growth also create an exceptional breeding ground for fungi, bacteria and plant viruses (not to mention weeds and various flying insect pests!). Ensure work surfaces, glass and flooring is kept tidy and hygienic, and you will greatly improve your chances of thwarting such undesirables gaining a foothold.
Equipping your Greenhouse
Install a steady work surface, adjusted to a comfortable height for you to work at, and robust enough to hold pots, compost and whatever else you envisage using. Consider using a table and perching seat – they take up little room, and can make working conditions far more comfortable.
A large, shallow sided tray is also essential.
Tools will vary according to your needs, and the nature of what you intend to grow, but secateurs, scissors, a hand watering can and a couple of sprays are all indispensable assets in the organic gardener’s arsenal.
