SOLAR POWERS ITS WAY THROUGH HISTORY

The origins of solar energy can be traced as far back as the 7th century BC.
In ancient Egypt, bricks for construction were made from shaping a mixture of mud and straw into blocks and baking it in the sun.Passive solar design – using architecture to get the most out of the sun’s capacity to heat and light up spaces indoors – was first used by the ancient Romans and Greeks.
In order to get the maximum benefit from the winter sun, they made sure their buildings were orientated towards the sun.In this way, they were also able to cut back on firewood which was not always readily available, making early use of renewable energy. The Romans took solar design seriously, making it illegal to obscure a neighbour’s access to sunlight and using glass for windows.
Much less passive was the use of solar energy by the Ancient Greeks, who used bronze shields to direct the sun’s rays onto the wooden ships of the Roman army to set fire to them. Some native cultures used the natural storage of heat by rocks to good effect by building their homes into the sides of rocky cliffs.
Later on in 1767, a Swiss scientist called Horace de Saussure was believed to have constructed the first solar collector, but the real momentum for solar energy development came in 1839 when French scientist, Edmond Bequerel discovered the photovoltaic effect.Becquerel discovered that by exposing certain materials to light, it was possible to increase the electric current.
Mathematician Auguste Mouchout continued the French nation’s interest in solar power, and invented the first active solar motor and a solar powered steam engine.  Both inventions failed due to high production costs.
Over time and all over the world, scientists were working out new ways of harnessing the sun’s energy.  In 1876, William Grylls Adams discovered that selenium produced electricity when exposed to light, without the need for heat or moving parts.
Albert Einstein, better known for his Theory of Relativity, was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his theories on the photoelectric effect – involving the generation of electricity through solar cells.
In the 1950s, Bell Laboratories (now known as AT & T Laboratories) developed the first silicon solar cell which could generate a measurable electric current. It was the first time that something had been developed that could convert sufficient amounts of the sun’s energy to power ordinary electrical appliances.
The launch of the satellite, Vanguard 1 in the fifties marked the first practical application of photovoltaic solar cells.  In 1981, the first solar powered aircraft flew from France to England powered by 16 000 solar cells giving off 3 000 watts of power.
The Arab Oil Embargo in 1973/4 forced western economies to rethink solar energy research as a means of reducing their dependence on oil.A large number of new applications was made possible after Dr Elliot Berman designed a less expensive solar cell in the 1970s.
Concern for the environment has galvanised research into finding viable alternatives to fossil fuels, such as wind power, geothermal and solar power. And whilst solar technology today is powering far more than a hand-held radio, the basic idea of solar power has remained the same since ancient times – it is a viable renewable energy source.

Building Solar Panel Technology To Heat Your Swimming Pool

Are you considering solar panels for heating your pool? Because, I have good news!  Buying solar panels to heat your pool won’t cost you much. You could even construct them yourself for under 0 in materials and less than a weekend’s worth of work. A further benefit is that, once you’ve made the initial installation cost, you won’t be paying an ongoing fuel bill.

Why Not Discover the Advantages of Building Solar Energy Here?

Before you decide to use solar panels for your pool, there are a few key factors to consider. First, will your solar panel system get adequate sunlight throughout the day? These types of solar panels are passive systems. They’re usually made of plastic coils filled with water and placed between sheets of shatter-resistant glass. The sun heats the water that has collected in the coils. The water is then pumped into the pool.

If your lot is surrounded by tall trees that cover your house and yard, it may not get ample sunlight for a passive pool heater. But an elevated rooftop that looks to south or west is an ideal place for solar panels to get ample access to the sun during the day.

The Most Popular System To Solar Panel is Now Self-Build

Next, how much difference would there be between the outside air and the temperature you want the pool to be? For example, if you’re wanting to heat an outdoor pool in Minnesota to 80 degrees during a freezing winter, stay with pool covers and a powerful gas heating system. On the other hand, if you want to heat an outdoor pool in California to 80 degrees during 50-degree weather, a solar pool heating system would be perfect.

If you do install a solar heater, you’ll still need to cover your pool for such times when the air is cooler than your pool’s water temperature. Any time you notice steam rising from the pool’s surface, it’s best to use the pool cover to retain the heat.

If you’re new to solar heating systems, here’s some advice. Some people mistakenly think that they might save even more money if they used their pool’s solar heater to heat water for their home. However, the two systems should not be mixed or used together. The water in your pool is being conditioned with chlorine and muriatic acid. It’s okay to swim in it and even swallow a couple of mouthfuls, but it would be unwise to combine it with your home’s water system. Solar water heating for your home is an whole different project.

Solar Panels: How Do They Work?

There are basically two types of solar panels: electricity producing and heat generating. They cannot be used interchangeably, so you need to know the difference. But both types can save you money and help you live a greener lifestyle.

Find Out How Solar Panel to Make Energy or Heat Systems Operate Here

A solar thermal collector harnesses energy from sunlight to heat water and even other fluids, like oil. This method uses tubing in which the water runs through once heated These types of solar panels are great for heating pools, hot tubs, spas and water for homes and businesses. They can also heat building interiors by using baseboard heating units and hot water flooring systems. Once they are installed, there is usually no need for additional heating fuels. However, the systems usually require some kind of motorized pump to circulate the fluids.

Solar photovoltaic cells help generate DC (direct current) electricity. Typically, they use semi-conductor material (silicon) in the panel, which interacts with sunlight to produce electricity. That electricity can be used to power household and electrical appliances, or even the entire house if the system is big enough. The panels can only produce electricity when they are receiving direct sunlight.

Solar Panels: Use To Make Household Power

To ensure that you have continuous energy twenty four hours and through all weathers you can include a back-up battery unit with your system. You can use the less expensive lead-acid batteries (like the kind your car uses), but remember that they must be filled with distilled water to maintain their charge. Some batteries are more costly, but they have certain advantages. Sealed AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries will retain their charge without any maintenence. Freeze-resistant gel batteries are best for colder climates.

Both the thermal collector and the photovoltaic systems typically use glass panels to encase their collection systems, and both need exposure to direct sunlight. For best results, the panels should be placed in a south-facing location that supplies maximum exposure to sunlight during the day. Solar panels can be used in almost any geographical location, but they will not be as effective in areas that have a high number of cloudy periods during the year.

Even in the sunniest regions, it’s a good idea to have a backup generator for either system. Backup generators can be fueled with biodiesel to be consistent with your green lifestyle. And the generators can be used if your battery storage fails, or whenever there is an unexpected period of overcast days.

Wind Power For Home

A fantastic way of generating electricity today is by way of wind power. These days, homemade energy is attracting a great deal of interest from around the world due to the costs of installation being so low and how effective home made energy is.

For some more really good articles regarding wind power. Check out: Wind Power For Home

Home wind power is capable of providing results that will have your full satisfaction and it offers the possibility to easily save up to 75% off your electricity bill. A wind power system can
be taken advantage of individually or it can always be combined with a solar energy system for optimal productivity. The wind power system would be the better option if residing in windy conditions. If residing in sunny conditions then a solar energy system would be more suitable. However, that varies according to the geographical position of your location. Regardless of the season, certain regions such as those located closer to the equator, might benefit from a large quantity of sun all year long. Whereas other areas like in U.S in Mount Washington are known for a consistency of windy weather. If you get to the benefits of both then it is suggested to be a better option to install a wind power system combined with solar. On the whole by assessing the overall weather conditions overall where you are residing this would help determine which system would be your best choice.

It would not be a difficult task to build a home wind power generator. A wind generator can be easily assembled by any competent DIY enthusiast. Granted that some motivation and dedication will come in handy, so the only thing that you truly require is an understandable instruction manual. This type of manual will guide you through the process in a comprehensive manner. Proper guides cover every step of the assembly, including the materials and equipment, the procedures, and all technical aspects.  Apart from the manual, you may also need some basic power and hand tools.

Trying to decide on what size wind generator or turbine needed does depend on the amount of energy you need to generate to power your home. For instance, 2000 watts and higher , then you would have to build a larger wind generator. But if your requirements are around 700 to 2000 watts of power then a smaller wind turbine or wind generator would be plenty.

Just a reminder for another really great article about using wind power at home, this is a must read especially for those currently exploring this method of generating energy. Take a look at: Things You Should Know About Wind Power

The most popular wind turbines used for home are the smaller installations. As you can imagine the larger the generator or turbine gets the assembly and installation becomes more intricate. On the other hand this would also depend on the size of the land and funds available, there is certainly no doubts that this cannot be achieved at home. If you are looking at building or installing a wind power generator and only have a small amount of space, then it’s advisable to go smaller, at least for the first time. For the construction to begin you may need access to a welding machine and a metal lathe.

One thing is for sure that whichever size you choose to build is that the foundation is strong and it has been built as it should be. For a wind turbine to give best results consider the height as better winds are captured at higher altitudes. Regardless of the strength of the wind a good wind turbine will produce a regular supply of electricity.

The benefits of using custom wind power at home include low costs of assembly and the production of clean, eco-friendly, quiet, and completely free energy. Wind power is also not just restricted for homeowners. Actually, it is frequently employed in the commercial sector. Today there are lots
of office buildings that are already running exclusively off wind power.

It is possible to generate surplus electricity by using home wind power systems. In that case, you could sell that surplus quantity to various utility companies, which are eager to purchase it and earn some extra money. Consequently, by generating power at home you have the possibility to save on your electricity bill, sell your excess electricity, and use green energy. To sum it all up its a win win situation if wind power is your choice, you can only achieve more and you will never look back. A positive outcome is without doubt what you should only expect.
