How to Tie Dye Shirt Designs

I’ve beloved tie dying ever since I dipped tightly rubber banded t-shirts into tubs of Rit Dye in elementary school. The colors and patterns had been magical, however the enjoyable part was wearing my creation!

Several years later and I was in The Brightside Tie Dye Emporium in Brattleboro, VT. Upon trying out with a bag of goodies, I seen a small signal that announced that the owner was running a class in tie dying. I signed up instantly and shortly discovered the mysteries of creating eye catching, non-fading t-shirts in myriads of colors and patterns. Past utilizing the data to create items to sell at native farmer’s markets, I additionally used it in class and summer camp so that kids might make pleasant items of their own. The pride they showed when wearing shirts they made themselves was justified. They were really gorgeous.

I’m about to describe the method I used with the teams of kids. I am positive there are different and better ways, however this labored nice for me. The dyes to make use of are Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes. I at all times bought mine as a dry powder in order that the dye would have a much longer shelf life. If you wish to do this on a limited scale, attempt buying three or so colors. Keep in mind, the colours can be combined! Dyes, chemical substances, and squirt bottles can be bought from the source given on the backside of the article, though there are several different purveyors, too. Pro just occurred to be the company I used. Additionally they sell small booklets detailing how to create certain designs are are properly definitely worth the few dollars they cost. Any other materials may be purchased on the local Wal-Mart, Ok-Mart, or grocery store. The hot button is that I wanted the shirts to be non-fading and final a long, long, long time. If fading is just not an issue, Rit Dyes are far inexpensive and much simpler to use. If you wish to create something that will probably be usually worn and still gorgeous three years from now, this is the deal…

Here is our methodology for group tie dying. It’s a lot of work, so roll up these sleeves and enlist the guardian volunteers!

1) Purchase the shirts on sale. We get Massive and Xlarge for sixth graders. I do not take pleasure under consideration when we do shirts. Nobody that I’ve met desires a shirt that looks like Spandex! I put a number of moms in 4XL, and although they said they’d use them for sleep shirts, they sure appeared snug!

2) You’ll now need to scrub the shirts to take away any grease that was left on the threads from processing. Wash shirts in HOT water with ¼ cup of washing soda or Professional-Dye Activator and ¼ cup of Synthrapol. Rinse on COLD.

3) Put a special quantity on the tag of each shirt in permanent marker.

4) Make a solution of 5 gallons of faucet water to 3 cups of soda ash or Pro-Dye Activator. You will need four or 5 batches of this in one tub. I exploit my large sink for this. Add the shirts; as much as 18 at a time, and let sit in the solution for 15 minutes. Sporting rubber gloves, squeeze out and put in washer. Set washer to final spin, and spin with no water coming into tub for rinse. Place shirts in a rubbish bag to stop them from drying.

5) Mix dyes with distilled water up to one week earlier than dying. To at least one quart of distilled water in an previous blender, add the following:

¼ cup of dye

Fuschia

Bright Orange

Golden Yellow

Deep Purple

Raspberry (reddish purple)

½ cup of dye

Turquoise (FOAMS!)

Kelly Green

Cobalt Blue (FOAMS!)

1 cup of dye

Better Black

6) Store the dyes in squirt bottles and clean milk jugs.

7) Maintain folded shirts on a “grid table” when dying.

8) Wrap shirts in seran wrap. Get this from a kitchen / restaurant supply firm.

9) Let shirts sit wrapped for 2 days.

10) Whereas filling washer (top loading solely), take rubber bands off clothes (put on rubber gloves) and toss in washer (12 – 18). Wash and rinse on cold. Then wash on HOT with ¼ cup of synthrapol and rinse cold. Dry in drier.

11) Wash with darkish clothes the first few times, but shirt shall be colorfast.

Dyes and provides can be found from Pro Chemical and Dye Firm of Somerset, MA.

Have enjoyable!
